December 13, 2007 - Videogame sales were up 52 percent overall in November over the same period in 2006, jumping from $1.74 billion in total sales to $2.63 billion, according to data released today by the NPD Group.

The increase roughly corresponds to the industry's overall year-to-date growth. Through November 2007, year-to-date videogame sales stand at $13.12 billion, up 50 percent from $8.76 billion during the same timeframe in 2006.

Software sales make up the majority of the industry's overall revenue, with console game sales grabbing the lion's share of the market. Last month, console game sales leapt an impressive 75 percent over November 2006, increasing to $1.3 billion.

Game software also leads in year-to-date revenue, but console sales are tops in growth so far this year, seeing a whopping 103 percent increase over the first 11 months of 2006.

"If the year had ended on December 1st, 2007 would be up 5% versus last year," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "With the biggest month of the year yet to go, total industry sales are on track to achieve between $18 billion and $19 billion in the U.S."

In terms of specific hardware sales, Nintendo still sits atop the pack, despite supply chain restrictions on Wii production. According to NPD, Nintendo sold 1.53 million DS units and 981,000 Wiis in November. Microsoft sold a solid 770,000 Xbox 360s. Sony moved 466,000 PlayStation 3s; 496,000 PS2s; and 466,000 PS3s.

All hardware types saw significant sales increases in November over October sales, mainly due to NPD's inclusion of the Black Friday holiday shopping season kickoff.

"Thanksgiving fell earlier in the reporting month this year than it did last which certainly helped fuel part of the incredible 52% increase over last year," Frazier said.

According to NPD, the double-shot of a timely price cut and holiday season momentum gave the PS3 the biggest sales boost of any hardware platform. Sony's flagship machine saw a 285 percent increase in sales in November over October.

Meanwhile, the DS and Xbox 360 saw their second best months ever, topped only by December 2006 sales numbers. And the Wii beat its December 2006 sales by 60 percent to achieve its best sales month to date.

On the software side, the Xbox 360 version of Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare led the way, selling 1.57 million units in November. Super Mario Galaxy nabbed second place with 1.12 million units sold.

Here's a full breakdown from NPD:

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (360) - 1.57M units
2. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - 1.12M
3. Assassin's Creed (360) - 980K
4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2) - 967K
5. Wii Play (Wii) - 564K
6. Mass Effect (360) - 473K
7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) - 444K
8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) - 426K
9. Halo 3 (360) - 387K
10. Assassin's Creed (PS3) - 377K

As part of its monthly sales reporting today, NPD also dropped a few interesting tidbits about peripheral sales.

The Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on has sold 269,000 units in the U.S. to date, which means about 3.4 percent of all 360s in America have the peripheral attached. Sony has sold 2.91 million PS3s (with Blu-Ray players included) in the U.S. to date. But overall, the most popular peripherals belong to the Wii.

"4 of the 5 best-selling accessories for the month were Wii controllers," Frazier said. "The Wii Zapper, which debuted in November, sold 232,000 units. The second-best selling accessory for the month was the PS3 wireless controller at 282,000 units.
