Shop the PS Store Without a PC

November 20, 2007 - It's a Thanksgiving miracle; the often mentioned PlayStation Store website is now live.
If you have a PS3, it might not sound like much -- after all, you've been shopping in the Store since launch -- but if you're just packing a PSP, the website now gives you the chance to download original games, classic titles, themes, videos and more.
However, don't think the site is just a rehash of the Store you can find via the PS3. Exclusively on the site -- at least for now -- are three downloads you won't find anywhere else: Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, Gangs of London, WipeOut Pure and a trailer for Beats.
Syphon Filter: Combat Ops originally debuted as a demo on the Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow UMD, but now it's a full-fledged, $9.99 online multiplayer 67.5 MB game. Set to handle eight players, Combat Ops allows you to customize maps, objectives, spawn points, zip line locations and more that you can then upload and battle others in and with. After playing other user-generated maps, you'll be able to rate and rank the experience that covers five gameplay modes. Multiplayer action will be both ad-hoc and infrastructure.
Gangs of London has you battling the worst of the criminal underground in an attempt to become the worst of the worst. Originally a UMD released as part of the Getaway franchise, Gangs is a 1 GB download priced at $19.99 that puts you in control of one of five gangs and sets you loose in story chockfull of graphic novel narrative. The 2005 UMD release, WipeOut Pure is also available in a downloadable format. It'll set you back $14.99 and 156 MB.
Tucked away in the Trailer section is our first look at Beats, a game almost entirely based on playback of your personal music collection. You can read our full report here, but the gist is the trailer shows some pre-loaded tracks being turned into gameplay. The game creates button-press combo sequences similar to DDR and DJ Max Portable and -- at least from a quick glance -- features gameplay modes such as "Challenge" and "Jamming." Downloadable content is planned, you can customize backgrounds, and the game supports one to four players locally as well as an online ranking mode.
We'll have more on the Store's debut this evening.
